Lucerne Valley Car Shows - a Jeanmarie Taylor Production

Candy Cane Classic III Car and Bike Show
                              November 14, 2009

The 3 Annual Lucerne Valley Candy Cane Classic Car and Bike show started out cold and windy last Saturday and ended warm and cozy for all the participants and interested spectators. Started three years ago as a fund raiser for the Roadrunners, the Candy Cane Classic is always a special event. This year the car show benefited the CSA 29 Parks and Recreation Youth activities fund.

It takes a lot of work to produce a car show and can’t be done by just one person. Volunteers like the Fritz family, the Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Helping Hands, and the Taylor family were all needed to get the show on the road as they say.

Joe Brunasso with his 1970 Monte Carlo has been to the last four shows and won a trophy every time. Joe helped out with this years show designing the flyer, passing out flyers at other shows, and judging. Jim Kennel from Apple Valley and his wife Beverly spread the word for us and Jim was a judge, Beverly took photos for us since she does “Carscape” photography, and her work hangs in  local California galleries. She has a display at the Victorville Museum. She also generously donated a framed photo for a raffle.

Local Roy Tevis did a fantastic job as a judge and rallying the local merchants for very generous donations. The participants of the car show were happy to receive, pizza’s from Café 247, dinner for two to Adelita’s, Christmas cards from Two Little Indians, ten video rentals from Star Light Video, Becs Turbo Diesel donated several additive packages, Napa donated a dozen hats, and Butcher Block  with a multi piece tool set with workbench for our big raffle.

Some local favorites come time and time again like Roy Tevis, Terry Fisher, Dick Allen, Dave Drott  and Frank Castillo. It is always like a family gathering with jokes and war stories being swapped. This year everyone was treated to polish sausages and foot long hot dogs by Mark’s Catering. The smell of the fried  onions and peppers were as good as the dogs.

This year the show was captured on video and is on You Tube thanks to Rene De La Cruz from www.highdesertpeople.com  Rene heard about the show on Twitter and on www.lucernevalleycarshows.com and came out to take pictures and do interviews.

Over two hundred spectators came out to appreciate the workmanship of these fantastic cars. Lucerne Valley Honorary Mayor Jerry Bryant , Chamber of Commerce President Lorane Abercrombie and her husband J.L. and outgoing Municipal Advisory Council member Millie Rader also attended . People came from as far away as Los Angeles to see the show .

Big winners at the show were Pete Asloch of Apple Valley with his 1961 Chevy Impala. He won Best Exterior and the coveted People’s Choice trophy. Mark LeBouef of Pinon Hills won with his 1946 Big Boy Pick Up for Best Interior. Joe Brunasso of Oak Hills won Best of Show for his immaculate 1970 Monte  Carlo. From Hesperia , Craig Sturgill won Best Under Construction for his 1959 F-100 Ford pick up and Loren Bayer wrapped up the Best Bike trophy for his 1996 Honda Gold wing 1500 SE.
